Why You Need a Good Coach on Your Team (as Much as You Need an Accountant)

“Discover your gift, develop your gift, and then give it away every day.“
– Don Meyer, former Lipscomb men’s college basketball coach
As much as we like to think that we are self-sufficient, there are some points when you need another person to help you succeed. Whether you rely on a detail-oriented accountant or an insightful lawyer, you know when it’s time to bring in a fresh set of eyes with a specific expertise.
A coach can offer the same type of specialized skill. Before you balk, let me explore further.
A journey of self-discovery is a lot like designing an estate plan. Circumstances are always changing and there is always more to do. My expedition to my best self has taken a few twists and turns; I’ve been able to stay on track by having the right people by my side at the right times.
You may be surprised to learn that I also have a coach when I offer the same services myself. Like my clients, I needed someone to help guide me when I couldn’t see my strengths and how to leverage them.
Even though I knew my values and was asking myself quality questions, I sometimes struggled to stay in a positive state. Common sense is not common practice. Keeping myself moving in a clear and comfortable direction seemed to require more navigation skills than I had.
I have had far too many moments in which I felt that everything I was doing was wrong and that I lacked the power to change. In other words, my progress was not as quick and fluid as I wanted it to be.
Once I found a coach, I really got my feet planted on the ground and discovered the path to the success I enjoy today.
Having a non-judgmental, skilled, caring but detached coach beside you gives you fresh perspective and renewed empowerment every step of the way. A coach knows that you were born with everything you need to succeed and, since they have studied the path of self-discovery so diligently, they can help you identify and bust through the roadblocks you encounter on your way forward.
They will help you develop a scoreboard for tracking your progress, and celebrate with you as you make gains, no matter how small they might seem.
The coach/coachee connection is a lovely, symbiotic relationship: as the coach lights your way home—warmly, gently, step by glorious step—your light begins to shine a little brighter, too. Soon you’ll find yourself radiating power and positivity, just like your coach does. This is the kind of synergy that makes life worthwhile and makes the world a better place.
My coaches have helped me stay mindful and achieve clarity on my perspective. I also received a great boost of confidence when my coach noted my high level of emotional intelligence and my ability to speak what I saw. She said there was a quiet power about me; when I spoke about a difficult topic that other people had skirted around, I went straight to the point in a light, calming way that allowed the others around me to speak their truth, too.
Her observation motivated me to enter the field of coaching. I have never looked back.
All of my schooling constantly kept me being mentored since we are all life-long learners if we choose to be. I was delighted to discover that coaching came naturally to me. My career as a coach has turned out to be fabulously fulfilling in every way. Today, it is a major part of who I am. And I carry forward that skill as a Family Enterprise Advisor – facilitating family meetings and offering other support to people who are in transition.
The best part of my job is helping my clients find their true paths as well. If you have doubts about what you can do, it’s time to find out if they are real or if you are just undermining yourself for reasons you have yet to comprehend.
